How a Men's Hoodie Should Fit: A Five Point Guide

Most hoodies fail at the shoulder, the cuff or the hem. A simple five point check for regular, relaxed and sleeveless cuts, and how to keep the fit after the wash.

A good hoodie is decided at the shoulder. Everything else follows from there.

Most men buy a hoodie by the size on the label and hope. The result is familiar. Sleeves that bunch at the wrist, a hem that rides up, a hood that has gone flat by lunchtime. Fit is not luck. It comes down to five points you can check in a mirror in under a minute, and it is the standard every piece in the LGLGFG hoodies collection is cut against.

1. The Shoulder Seam

Start here. On a regular fit, the seam sits on the edge of the shoulder bone. On a relaxed cut it drops a few centimetres down the arm, on purpose. If it lands halfway to your elbow, the hoodie is simply too big.

A dropped shoulder should look planned. That is the line between a relaxed silhouette and one that swallows you, the same idea covered in Oversized Fit: Why It Took Over.

2. Chest and Body

Pinch the fabric at the side of your chest. A regular fit gives you a few centimetres. A relaxed fit gives more, but the fabric should still fall straight rather than balloon at the waist.

Fabric does most of the work here. Cotton polyester fleece has enough weight to hang cleanly and enough body to keep its line, which is why the Tenet Hoodie and the Static Hoodie are both built on it.

3. Sleeve Length

With your arms relaxed, the cuff should sit at the wrist bone, or stack once just above the hand. Now reach forward. If the cuff slides halfway up your forearm, the sleeve is short. A ribbed cuff that keeps its grip holds the length where it was set.

4. Hem Length

The hem should land at or just below the belt line. Lift both arms overhead. A well cut hoodie keeps your waist covered. Too long and it shortens your legs. Too short and it reads as shrunk.

What goes underneath matters as well. A relaxed hoodie sits best over a tapered lower half like the Canon Joggers, so the proportion stays balanced top to bottom.

5. The Hood

The most overlooked detail. A properly built hood holds its shape when it is down and frames the face when it is up. Thin hoods fold flat and lose structure after a few washes. Decent fleece weight is what keeps it standing.

Regular, Relaxed or Sleeveless

Regular fit suits layering under a jacket and a sharper look. Relaxed fit suits wearing on its own, where the drape becomes part of the outfit.

When the weather turns warm, a sleeveless cut like the Volt Sleeveless Hoodie keeps the hood and the structure and drops the heat. For a matched look, the Axis Tracksuit pairs a fleece hoodie with joggers cut to the same proportion. More on that in How to Wear a Men's Matching Set.

Keeping the Fit

A hoodie's fit is only as good as it is after twenty washes. Wash cold and inside out. Skip the dryer. Fleece that is tumble dried on high shrinks in length first, so the hem is always the first thing to go. The same principles apply across the range and are covered in Caring for ActiveEdge Fabric.

The Short Version

Shoulder seam where it belongs. Room in the body without excess. Cuff at the wrist. Hem at the belt. A hood that holds. Get those five right and a hoodie looks considered every time. That is the standard behind LGLGFG Urban Athletis Wear.

FAQs

How should a men's hoodie fit?
The shoulder seam sits on the edge of the shoulder for a regular fit, or slightly lower for a relaxed cut. The cuff lands at the wrist, the hem at the belt line, and the body has room without ballooning. See the hoodies collection.

Should I size up for an oversized hoodie?
Only if the hoodie is cut as a regular fit. A relaxed cut already has the extra room built in, so sizing up pushes it past intentional and into baggy. The difference is explained in Oversized Fit: Why It Took Over.

What is the best hoodie fabric for Australian weather?
Cotton polyester fleece. It holds its shape, sits lighter than heavyweight cotton and dries faster. For warmer months, a sleeveless hoodie like the Volt keeps the look without the heat.

How do I stop my hoodie shrinking?
Cold wash, inside out, and air dry. Heat is what shrinks fleece, and the hem goes first. Full care notes are in our care guide.
